Below is a Thank You Letter to our recent generous donors.  If you want to make a donation now, please send a PayPal payment to donate@childrenofbulgaria.com.We have more projects coming up that will need funding!

As the poorest country in the EU, Bulgaria has an ailing healthcare system which also hurts the youngest in need - the newborns and kids. Sadly, Bulgaria is among the top three European countries with the highest death rate among newborns. The Pirogov Hospital is the major institution for active treatment and emergency medicine, located in the capital city of Sofia. Prof.Dr. Rossen Drebov, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, has informed us that the new building for ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and operating theaters were recently completed, but there is currently no money for operating tables, lamps and apparatuses for anesthesia, monitors, surgical instruments, and other basic equipment (including for the newborns). We hope you will make a difference!

  1. Status update: We are speaking with multiple US manufacturers of surgical instruments. Only a few offer instruments for pediatric laparoscopy, and many will only deal with hospitals. We plan to begin talking to distributors and European manufacturers as well. Any help from people in the industry would be appreciated.

Separately, we have reached our initial goal and are now collecting funds for purchasing operating room equipment such as an operating table or a lamp, or a similar initiative based on the most pressing needs at the pediatric department in Pirogov.

  2. Dear Benefactors,
We have been in contact with all major surgical manufactures in US and Internationally.
We have requested quotes and will assess them in the next few weeks. It seems that the instruments we are buying for Pirogov are state-of-the-art and the latest in pediatric recovery surgery. So hopefully our gift will make a difference to the little patients in the hospital. The list of manufactures we are in touch follows:
    Aesculap
    Mediflex
    Stryker
    Olympus
    Carefusion
    Karl Storz
    CooperSurgical
    Smith&Nephew
    Medtronic
    Richard Wolf
    Covidien

  3. Wow, we broke the donations thermometer! THANK YOU to all of you who came to our fundraising event last night and who donated online. There is still time to make a donation! We are still collecting funds to purchase much needed (and expensive) equipment for the operating theaters in the pediatric intensive care unit at Pirogov Hospital.

We are so impressed and proud of the generosity and big-heartedness of our fellow ex-pats and friends. And thank you Polina Gerontieva and Orlin Jordanov for your tireless work, and to the many organizations and people who helped us spread the word. We will continue our work as it is not finished!

  4. We have now narrowed down the suppliers of the much needed pediatric laparoscoly equipment. We are in the final stages of determining which alternative would be most cost effective. Additionally, we are communicating with Proff.Dr. Drebov to make sure that the remaining funds will be utilized for the most pressing needs of the pediatric unit and will keep you updated.

  5. The instruments have been ordered! After an extensive search, we found the best price and even negotiated a further 10% discount for a charitable organization! The instruments now cost $2,600 rather than the initial quote of $3,500. We were We have sent the payment to Duffner in Germany, and expect them to be shipped to Pirogov by the end of February. We are still waiting to see if we need to pay any taxes or customs charges. Right now, we have about $6,700 left to purchase other equipment for the pediatric surgery department at Pirogov!
